Jack Norris, RD posted a blog entry on his website in December regarding a survey on vegetarian and vegans and recidivism. In conjunction with the Humane Research Council, 11,000 people were asked to complete questionnaires on vegetarian and vegan recidivism, along with other related topics. From this questionnaire/study, 84% said they quit being a vegetarian or vegan after trying the diet for a few months. That's a high recidivism rate!

We spent the winter Solstice at a sister community called Kanekiki, which is located in Puna. Along with about 14 other kookie, fun-loving raw foodists, we enjoyed a beautiful weekend preparing some lovely raw food dishes, as well as sharing two meals together. A great time was had by all! Below is a picture of most of us in the outdoor kitchen, showing some of the yummy dishes that we enjoyed. We also imbibed on a rare tropical fruit picked fresh from the trees just an hour before the meal of durian - amazing!
I really enjoy this time of year in Hawaii. While for most people, the weather in Hawaii would seem to be ideal, and that is often the case. However, for me, the break from the heat of the summer is a really nice one. During the two to three ʻwinterʻ months in Hawaii, the sun doesnʻt bake as much, the temperatures during the daytime are 5 to 10 degrees cooler, and the evenings bring with them a nice chill. I even need to wear sweaters and warm socks at night! I use the heavy bedspread! Instead of 85 to 90 during the daytime, the temperature hovers around the mid-70s to the low 80s. During the evening, the temperature gets down into the low 60s. Now, Iʻm sure that many of you reading this will laugh and get a kick out of these temperatures, especially those of you living in very cold northern climates. But, it is true that even in Hawaii, the temperatures do matter, and I definitely notice a change in the ʻseasonʻ - at least with the temperatures. A fire is actually a nice thing, too, at night!
Anyway, during this winter-time, I am appreciating the change in the temperature and days when it isnʻt as sweltering as it can feel during the summer. Itʻs just a nice break from the hotter months of the year. |
